          In the year of Jiawu in the years of Guangxu in the Qing dynasty (1894 A.D.), Lu Xun’s uncle Zhou Zhongxiang opened a small hotel at the exit of Duchangfang in the city of Shaoxing. The hotelier extracted “xian” and “heng” from the sentence “tolerance and generosity makes all things in the world prosperous” in “Tuan Zhuan” in “Book of Changes - Kun”, symbolizing the prosperous and booming business of the hotel. Mr. Lu Xun took Xianheng as the major background in his famous novels “Kong Yiji”, “Storms”, and “Tomorrow”, making Xianheng hotel well known at home and abroad.

          In 1981, at the centennial anniversary of Mr. Lu Xun, the old hotel was re-opened. The architectural style in Shaoxing during the late Qing Dynasty remains the same; the plaque with black characters against a white background is hanging at the center of the front beam under the eaves, bearing four horizontally arranged characters “Xian Feng Jiu Dian” (Xianheng hotel). There is an L-shaped counter facing the street, and at the end of the counter, there is a sign marked with the characters “Tai Bai Yi Feng” (the style of the God of white spirit); under the sign, there are celadon altars and blue edge bowls, forming a unique style. After 1991, the heritage of Xianheng hotel searched for the soil for the root of the brand in Lu Xun's works, and enhanced their core competitiveness through brand innovation and management, turning Xianheng Hotel into a famous hotel integrating the traditional style and the characteristics of the times, and combining the famous city, celebrities, and famous alcohols. Many domestic and foreign tourists come here to enjoy the wines, while expressing feelings and composing poetry and paintings. Famous writer Li Zhun expressed his feelings in his poem “the hotel has small size but big fame; the wine is old but intoxicating”; famous cartoonist Hua Junwu inscribed “meeting Xianheng, people feel that thousand cups of wine are not enough”. Xianheng Hotel is both a hotel and an attraction, which, together with Lu Xun's former residence, Baicaoyuan, Sanweishuwu, Tuguci and other cultural relics, constitute the key to interpret the classic works of Lu Xun.

          On November 25, 2007, after years of careful planning, the key tourism project in Shaoxing - the II phase of the Hometown of Lu Xun project, “Xianheng New Work” was started. This project is focused on the expansion and upgrade of Xianheng hotel. In addition to the “Tang Chi” part of Xianheng hotel which is reserved as the cultural landmark, the other parts were all demolished and reconstructed. After more than two years of arduous construction, a five-star culture-theme hotel inheriting the historical context, on the theme of Lu Xun culture, the culture in the south of the Yangtze River, and Yue culture - Xianheng Hotel, was presented in front of the world. After expansion and transformation, Xianheng Hotel covers a building area of 57,000 square meters, with 206 deluxe rooms, including 111 standard rooms, 74 big bed executive rooms, 21 luxury suites and theme suits; it has more than 2,000 dinning seats including 47 luxury private rooms on the themes of Lu Xun culture, imperial culture, wine culture, opera culture, and the culture of sentiments, and 1 multi-purpose hall which can accommodate 800 people. “Tang Chi” is the must-to-visit place for tourists visiting Shaoxing. The hotel also has a western restaurant and Japanese cuisine, as well as seven well-facilitated conference rooms of different sizes equipped with simultaneous interpretation systems and audio-visual equipment, in addition to the business center, souvenir shops, recreation leisure clubs and other necessities.

          The ancient but young Xianheng Hotel has become the living room of Shaoxing and a landmark of cultural tourism and leisure.
